Trump Calls Emergency War Room Meeting to Address Hormuz Standoff
The emergency session was triggered in part by Iran's announcement earlier that day of a renewed closure of the strategically vital waterway — compounded by reported attacks on vessels transiting the strait — all unfolding less than 24 hours after Trump publicly declared that a deal to end the war could be struck "within a day or two."
According to media, "if there is no breakthrough soon, the war could resume in the coming days."
The high-level gathering brought together Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Also in the room were White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, special envoy Steve Witkoff, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine.
The meeting came as tensions in the Strait of Hormuz flared anew despite reported headway in negotiations over Iran's uranium enrichment activities and its stockpile of enriched uranium, the report noted.
Speaking directly to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump struck a defiant tone, saying Iran "got a little cute … they wanted to close up the Strait again," and making clear that the country "can't blackmail us." He added that talks with Tehran were continuing and that he expected clarity on the path forward by day's end.
The current crisis has its roots in a joint US-Israeli offensive launched against Iran on February 28, to which Tehran responded with retaliatory strikes on Israel and other regional nations hosting American military assets. Hostilities have been frozen since April 8, when Pakistan brokered a two-week ceasefire.
Washington and Tehran held direct talks in Pakistan last weekend, and diplomatic efforts to schedule a follow-up session in Islamabad are reportedly underway.
